Organizing Fellowship

Teamsters Local 804 represents nearly 8,000 members across New York City, Long Island, and Westchester County.
Local 804 is working on a long-term campaign targeting a large corporate employer that has had significant negative impacts on both workers and their surrounding communities. We are seeking new organizers who want to expand their skill set through hands-on worker organizing. Organizing Fellows will learn the skills required to organize workers and build sufficient power to win concrete gains from employers. They will be mentored closely by expert union organizers with a cohort of other fellows. This is a full-time, New York-based position with a minimum commitment of one year. Organizing experience is welcomed, but those without organizing experience are still encouraged to apply. This fellowship will function as an on-ramp for newer organizers interested in gaining experience in workplace organizing.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Meet consistently with Organizing Mentor and fellowship cohort
- Learn and implement tried and true organizing methods and tactics for building worker power
- Building engagement and commitment with worker leaders through organizing committees
- Planning and carrying out actions and events to support worker organizing efforts
- Maintaining data tracking systems with regular input of new contacts and member participation into a database
- Conducting small to large-scale organizing meetings and events to support organizing efforts
Qualifications:
- Excellent interpersonal, listening, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to work well with a team, agitate around key issues, and motivate others to take action
- Understanding of and commitment to a broader working-class perspective
- Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice
- Strong commitment to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
- Effective communicator and facilitator
- Ability to work well under pressure and manage time efficiently
- Willingness to work an unconventional schedule, including night and weekend hours
- Ability to work on your feet for extended periods of time, and be able to lift up to 50 lbs regularly
- Those with language skills in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole are heavily encouraged to apply
