Purpose
Organizers are responsible for connecting internal and community campaigns by organizing workplace teams, making home visits, performing worker assessments, planning and carrying out worksite organizing and comprehensive campaigns while fostering long-term relationships with community allies to advance common goals of the union and the community. Organizers will advance the broader strategic goals of the union by leveraging community support and partnerships.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES The Community Organizer may be responsible for any combination of the following:
- Recruits and develops worksite leaders to become involved in union activities.
- Develops volunteer organizers from within the membership.
- Develops broad, representative organizing teams of worksite leaders, and trains them to move worksite organizing campaigns.
- Visits job sites to communicate with workers.
- Visits workers in their homes.
- Creates leaflets, social media posts, videos, newsletters, and other materials for internal and external organizing campaigns as needed.
- Obtains and creates worksite charts. Maintains list, which may include input on, and operation of, computerized database systems.
- Informs supervisor of activities, developments and progress of organizing activity, including worker meetings.
- Engages with and fosters long-term relationships with community organizations to achieve common goals.
- Organizes and supports events, forums, and activities with union members, community members, and/or community organizations to support and advance union goals.
- Develops and implements political education initiatives for both members and community allies
- Serves as a staff liaison assigned to TAAAC committees to support the work of the union.
- Meets goals and deadlines.
- Promptly return phone calls, especially to members.
- Complete administrative tasks such as Expense Reports.
- Works collaboratively with leaders, staff and advocacy organizations. Accepts and applies feedback and constructive criticism from supervisors, leaders and other staff.
- Performs related work as required.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma and at least 3 years’ experience in union and/or community organizing; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of union organizing practices and principles such as Bargaining for the Common Good
- Leadership and motivational skills
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Group facilitation skills and use of consensus-based decision-making.
- Fluent bilingual skills are desirable.
- Basic knowledge of labor laws and anti-union employer tactics especially with respect to union organizing.
- Basic computer skills, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and E-Mail Programs.
- Knowledge of how to utilize digital communication including social media in an organizing context Women and people of color are encouraged to apply.

Additional Requirements:
- Extended day and occasional overnight travel.
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
- Must possess a valid Maryland driver's license, auto insurance with business coverage, and an automobile for business use.
- Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
Physical Requirements (as required by ADA)
Work is performed in a variety of employment settings. Driving, travel, temporary assignments, and irregular and extended work hours are required.
