Position: Community and Workforce Organizer

Where: Based in Stockton, CA

Compensation: Based on experience, $55,000 – $75,000 per year with full health and retirement benefits.

About Us: The San Joaquin Building Trades Council (SJBTC) is composed of 19 construction unions representing over 12,000 members in San Joaquin County. We work to expand high road careers in unionized construction work. In addition to representing our members and affiliates, we administer the San Joaquin MC3 Apprentice Readiness Program (ARP) to provide equitable access to union construction careers.

The Job: The SJBTC is hiring a Community and Workforce Organizer to mobilize workers and community partners to bolster efforts to expand access to union construction careers and support the SJBTC’s diverse membership. This individual will work alongside the Program Director and Executive Director to support SJBTC worker advocacy programs, including a major initiative to recruit and support women to the trades. 

Job Duties Will Include:

  • Collaborate with Program Director and Executive Director to develop and execute member support, training, and organizing programs to empower current and potential union tradespeople with a focus on gender equity.
  • Coordinating recruitment of members to lead and participate in member support, training, and organizing programs and manage program experience
  • Reporting and tracking data on recruitment, participant experience, and program outcomes
  • Coordinating program outreach through in-person, online, and social media, among other mechanisms
  • Building relationships with affiliates and community partners to develop and execute cooperative strategies for mutual benefit.
  • Promoting the SJBTC and its programs in a variety of community settings to expand awareness and partnerships for its programs
  • Other duties as needed. While the majority of the job will be encompassed in the above categories, this is a dynamic work environment requiring flexibility and a growth-oriented mindset. Top-level training will be provided for the above and any additional tasks.

The Ideal Candidate will:

  • Understand and believe in the mission of the labor movement and basic principles of organizing
  • Have strong, friendly, and clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Embrace inclusionary principles and enjoy working with diverse groups of people
  • Be self-motivated, able to work collaboratively or independently, and interested in learning new skills 
  • Have a driver's license and be able to travel regularly throughout San Joaquin County and occasionally travel elsewhere.
  • Be comfortable with commonly used technology (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Email)
  • Social media engagement and advocacy experience preferred
