Labor Relations Representative

Based in Vermont

 

Title: Labor Relations Representative
Reports to: President and Executive Director
Staff Category: Full-time, Professional Field Position in Vermont

Qualifications: 
Five (5) or more years of related experience in union or community organizing, labor advocacy, or a related field. Strong understanding of labor laws, workers' rights, and collective bargaining principles in the Public Sector. This position involves traveling primarily throughout Vermont but may include other states in the northeast. Weekend and evening work may be required, as well as occasional overnight travel and out-of-state assignments. A valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a car are required. 

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in negotiating collective bargaining agreements. 
  • Recruit members for union activities, and legislative activism. 
  • Cultivate relationships with members in worksites, through routine work site visits and meetings.
  • Interpret collective bargaining agreements and other relevant laws, codes, regulations, policies, and practices.
  • Assist members in understanding their rights and provide assertive advocacy.
  • Handle grievances, appeals, requests for hearings, and other representational functions.
  • Aid attorneys and other staff in the preparation of hearings, including investigation and preparation of witnesses and exhibits. 
  • Assist members in achieving informal resolutions of work-related problems and disputes.
  • Mobilize members to participate in worksite actions as needed.
  • Identify, engage and develop workplace leaders and activist.
  • Organizing new groups of workers interested in union representation.
  • Conduct training sessions and workshops for union members on organizing techniques, labor rights, and workplace advocacy.
  • Maintain accurate records of service activities, membership outreach, and other related documentation.
  • Support the overall goals of NCEU and assist in various union efforts as needed.

Skills & Experience:

  • Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team.
  • Analytical skills necessary to interpret contract language, investigate and process grievances, and prepare contract proposals.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to think strategically, exercise good judgment and prioritize demands.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks under daily deadlines.
  • Ability to write well and author letters, newsletters and contract language.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Strong organizational and personal skills.
  • Strong digital and technical literacy skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including SharePoint, Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Compensation: 
Competitive salary, contingent on experience, car allowance, and an extensive benefit package; dental insurance, vision insurance, hearing insurance, health insurance, life insurance, AD&D insurance, EAP, paid time off, and 401(K) retirement savings plan.
