Lead Organizer

The Philadelphia Joint Board, Workers United, SEIU (“PJB”) seeks a Lead Organizer to join exciting campaigns to organize with workers building power at their worksites, in their industries and in their communities. We are looking for a hardworking, driven, talented individual who is committed to winning campaigns for working people and is ready to immediately get to work with the PJB Organizing Team to win campaigns.
WHO WE ARE: The Philadelphia Joint Board, Workers United is a melting pot of hard-working people from many different industries. Although the roots of the Joint Board are in textile and apparel manufacturing, we have grown to also represent workers in hospitality, retail, distribution, and industrial laundries.
Today, we still hold close our founding values: every industry is organizable, and every worker deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. These are the same values shared by our parent union, the Service Employee International Union, with more than two million members in the United States and Canada and a leader in the fight for social justice.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Supports workers in new organizing campaigns in and around Philadelphia and assists in executing the strategic organizing plan for the PJB.
- Leads staff and member teams, including managing goals, roles, processes and relationships, relationship building, and working collaboratively across the union.
- Assists in the direction and development and training of volunteer member organizers and Organizing Committee members.
- Ensures the tracking, reporting and analysis on all campaigns in their purview.
- Works with allied organizations and communities in the fight for better conditions in the industries the PJB organizes and represents.
- Works along with campaign staff to carry out duties as needed.
- Drives campaigns to win first contracts by working alongside the PJB Assistant Manager and developing membership bargaining committees.
Qualifications:
- Candidates who speak both Spanish and English strongly preferred.
- At least two years of experience in labor and/or community organizing is preferable
- Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to relate, establish, and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
- Excellent communication skills and ability to develop varied communications tools as part of organizing campaigns
- Skilled at managing multiple projects, meeting varied deadlines, and being flexible with changing priorities
- Effective demonstrable oral, written and listening skills in English.
- Experienced in receiving and offering feedback openly and constructively
- Effective facilitation and meeting management skills
- Experience organizing independently and as part of a team
- Working knowledge of computer programs including social media, Word, Excel, and good planning and administrative skills
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Car allowance will be provided.
LOCATION: Philadelphia, PA
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary for this position is $70,000 commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits include $500 monthly car allowance; phone reimbursement; fully employer-paid family health, dental, and vision insurance; a generous paid time off package; fully employer-paid pension retirement plan; life insurance; and other benefits.
