Organizer / Field Representative

Job title: Organizer/Field Representative
Reports to: AFT NM President and Executive Vice President
Location: Based in Albuquerque with frequent in-state and occasional out-of-state travel
Anticipated Start Date: October 1st, 2025
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Position Summary:
The American Federation of Teachers New Mexico seeks a passionate and committed Organizer to support our locals, grow union membership, build leadership capacity, and strengthen public education across the state. This position is ideal for someone who is self-motivated, organized, and dedicated to worker empowerment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify, recruit, and support local activists and union leaders
  • Train and develop leadership teams, including building representatives, member organizers, and organizing committees
  • Support locals in developing and executing organizing plans
  • Assist with contract campaigns, negotiations preparation, and ratification processes as needed
  • Support locals in enforcing collective bargaining agreements, including assisting with contract violation concerns
  • Attend and support local union meetings, events, and trainings- including new employee orientations
  • Use AFT provided databases to track membership and organizing activity
  • Develop union communications, including flyers, literature, and digital content that support local organizing goals
  • Conduct regular site visits and one-on-one conversations with members and potential members
  • Participate in political or issue-based campaigns as needed
  • Serve as liaison between assigned local unions and AFT NM officers

Experience, Skills, Aptitude and Commitment

  • Commitment to the labor movement, public education, and worker rights
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a close team
  • Willingness to travel frequently throughout the state and occasionally out of state
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Proficiency with email, text messaging apps, virtual meeting platforms, and data tracking tools

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Starting salary: $42,500 annually
  • Monthly car and cell phone allowances
