Job Title: Full-time Regional Contract Negotiator/Organizer (Salaried Position)
Date: Immediate Opening
Location: St Cloud, MN area
JOB SUMMARY: The two primary responsibilities of this position are:
- Develop Leaders: Work with groups of members to identify leaders and potential leaders and train and develop them on their individual leadership path. Organize worksite leadership to better enable members to negotiate better contracts, make an impact in relevant political areas, and organize unorganized workers.
- Negotiations: To conduct the negotiation process from proposal creation through ratification and when appropriate strike preparation. Related duties include assisting members in enforcing contracts through direct action, the grievance procedure/arbitration and Unfair Labor Practice actions, acting as lead spokesperson in bargaining.
You will be responsible for:
- Signing up new hires to be members and train leaders on how to sign up new hires.
- Identifying, recruiting, training, and developing stewards and leaders.
- Conduct bargaining surveys, salary surveys, and other research activities to strengthen the negotiating position of assigned bargaining units. Prepares proposals and negotiates contracts and organizes around a contract issue and/or strike as needed.
- Developing and implementing plans for worksite campaigns for specific issues including public budget issues, contract negotiations, safety, etc.
- Explaining contract terms, concepts, benefits and obligations to members and potential members.
- Developing an internal organizing plan for bargaining units. Obtains and creates worksite organizing charts.
- Creating or assisting members in developing communication systems; write and edit leaflets, proposals, bargaining updates, newsletters, etc.
- Assisting stewards in their representational duties, including grievances and disciplinary appeals. Follow through where necessary.
- Engaging members in participation in union events, political and lobbying activities. Help members hold elected officials accountable.
- Working with community and other groups to advance contract and community campaigns.
What you will need to do the job (These skills will normally have been developed by working as a full-time union staff member in organizing or representational assignments):
- Ability to establish rapport with and organize members in widely diversified racial, ethnic, social, and economic groups.
- Good judgment and ability to discern priorities when faced with many important tasks.
- Knowledge of labor rights and contract language and ability to learn quickly.
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours, often including nights and weekends.
- Ability to communicate well in writing and orally; ability to mobilize membership.
- Ability to maintain work files and comply with administrative reporting.
- Proficiency with computers and applications including, but is not limited to: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Power Point, E-mail and Internet.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two or more years related public sector labor union experience required. Prior school district work experience and SEIU local union activism is preferred.
