Purpose
The Director of Nursing Practice is responsible for coordinating and evaluating activities of the Nursing Practice Department. The Director is responsible for answering questions for members and those interested in the field of nursing about how laws, rules and trends impact the practice of nursing. Other responsibilities include working cooperatively with ONA’s leadership, staff, and other stakeholders to contribute to outreach for building strength in ONA’s voice for the nursing profession.

Essential Functions

  • Takes initiative to identify and act on new opportunities related to nursing practice to enhance association efforts and minimize problems.
  • Collaborates with ONA leadership on creating goals for the Nursing Practice program.
  • Contributes practice expertise to other departments within ONA. 
  • Creates presentations and continuing education activities relevant to current nursing practice issues. 
  • Establishes relationships with representatives from other Associations, agencies, and interest groups relative to nursing practice.
  • Supports ONA local units by providing expertise and assistance with research and documentation of health and safety issues, including the development of contract language and guidance on reporting to regulatory agencies for enforcement in collaboration with ONA Labor Representative. 
  • Prepares and submits annual budget requests for program areas and manages approved budget.
  • Maintains and updates Nursing Practice statements and positions.
  • Submits written reports on departmental activities as requested by the supervisor or designee.

Consultation to Members, the Community, and Interested Parties

  • Contributes to the coordination, communication and meetings of the ONA Council on Practice and special interest caucuses. 
  • Provides consultation and assistance to local units and district nurses associations regarding nursing practice.
  • Responsible for developing a group of expert nurses in different expertise to provide support in providing testimony regarding expertise and will also serve as experts in communication for ONA when needed.
  • Take the lead in coordination with the Director of Communications to create opportunities with new nurses and soon-to-be nurses to promote ONA membership.
  • Present to graduating nurses in institutions to talk with them about ONA and the benefits of belonging
  • Contributes to the Ohio Nurses Foundation efforts as assigned.
  • Attend training, research, and present information within the health and safety sector, including, but not limited to, areas such as OSHA compliance, to support and promote safe working conditions for members.

Communications

  • Contributes as needed to the communication department for internal and external communications. 
  • Writes articles related to program areas for the Ohio Nurse and Health Professional Review, Ohio Nurse, Member Update, and other Association venues and products.

Continuing Education

  • Develops programs and independent studies for continuing education.
  • Serves as a speaker for educational programming on topics related to nursing practice.
  • Provides presentations to nurses, events or other community members.

Other Duties

  • Facilitates, attends, conducts, and staffs meetings as assigned
  • Mentors students.
  • Participates in the coordination and preparation of the biennial convention and other association events.
  • Represents the Association as a staff member at the biennial convention.
  • Participates in staff meetings and other required meetings, seminars, and Association events.
  • Takes ownership of assigned responsibilities and work product.
  • Submits time electronically per Association policy.
  • Submits credit card statements, if necessary, by the deadlines established.
  • Respects computer and laptop service requests and responds timely when action is required.
  • Provides information on calendar to assist other staff in knowing availability.
  • Maintains documents in a format that makes them readily accessible to other staff in accordance with office policy.
  • Travels throughout Ohio. Travels nationally occasionally. Overnight trips occasionally.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Typical Physical Requirements

  • Regularly uses a telephone and e-mail system for communication.
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with coworkers and Association contacts that have inquiries. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • The person in this position frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • This person must be able to drive.
  • Light work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.

Additional knowledge, skills and abilities may be required to perform additional tasks specific to work or special assignments.

Desirable Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience, which would likely produce the necessary knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

  • Requires a Masters degree (nursing or other health related field preferred).
  • 3-5 years experience in clinical nursing practice 
  • Current RN license in Ohio.
  • Current Ohio driver’s license.
  • Willing to travel.
  • Membership in ONA or another SNA.

Work Environment
The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such office environments. Observance of all safety rules and guidelines is imperative and expected at all times. The employee may be exposed to chemical compounds found in an office environment. Employee may also be exposed to hazardous household waste.
