Executive Director

A constituency group within the AFL-CIO, Pride at Work seeks full equality without restrictions or barriers for LGBTQIA+ individuals in our workplaces, unions, and communities, creating a Labor Movement that cherishes diversity, promotes inclusion, encourages openness, and ensures safety and dignity. The Executive Director will perform duties as assigned by the Executive Committee (EC) of the National Executive Board (NEB) in order to meet current cultural, political and economic challenges, and move the organization forward into the future.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the national, membership-based, 501(c)4 organization; implementing all programs, services and initiatives that execute the vision and directives of the National Co-Presidents and the EC, and serving at the will of the NEB; determine the staffing structure to fit the organization’s needs, strategic vision and financial capabilities, while hiring/firing and supervising staff, and setting the personnel policy in concert with the EC; preparing budgets for the EC and NEB, implementing them after approval, and maintaining the fiscal health of the organization.

Must have competency of LGBTQIA+ issues and history, community members, work experiences; recognizing and integrating marginalized identities into our work through the lens of intersectionality; continually learning as our community’s language and understanding of ourselves evolves; and placing a racial justice lens within everything we do.

The annual salary range for this position is $80,000 – $100,000, commensurate with experience. Competitive Health Plan, including Dental and Vision, and Retirement Plan.

ACCOUNTABILITY:
In accordance with the Pride at Work Bylaws and organizational policies, the Executive Director is accountable to the EC and serves at the will of the NEB. Pride at Work policies of nondiscrimination, zero tolerance for harassment or violence, and whistleblower protections likewise apply to the Executive Director and staff under their supervision.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Management

  1. The worksite will be at the organization’s Washington, DC headquarters, and will be maintained, and other such offices of the organization as may arise, as a safe and productive workplace.
  2. Ability to work independently to solve complex problems across a wide range of subject areas, not limited solely to organized labor, civil and human rights, LGBTQIA+ legislative, electoral and political issues, and to have the skills and proactive incentive to address challenges, reach out to experts and trustworthy sources in those areas, as well as the broader progressive movement, and grasp the unique dynamics and protocols inherent with working within the family of national labor unions and constituency groups.
  3. Proven organizational skills, reading comprehension, strategic planning and execution, attention to detail, and maintaining a professional, respectful and calm work environment in the midst of simultaneous projects, competing deadlines and shifting political and social challenges.
  4. Familiarity with, and ability to quickly learn, administrative level functions of the following essential programs. Additionally, this position trains other staff, officers, and chapter leaders to use these tools.
    • Google Workspaces (especially Gmail, Calendar, Sheets, Docs, Groups)
    • Zoom
    • Action Network (or similar CRM)
    • LAN (or similar CRM)
    • Quickbooks
    • Canva, Squarespace, and social media page administration
  5. Select and execute contracts for services and supervise the work of consultants to Pride at Work, including legal counsel, financial consultants, actuaries, and such others as may be necessary and as authorized by the EC.
  6. Provide for independent review of administrative policies or procedures as deemed necessary by the EC and NEB.
  7. Ensure necessary staff support to the EC, NEB, all committees, task forces, and chapters, and other organization activities, as needed and requested.
  8. Work closely with the Co-Presidents, Treasurer, and the EC, as a whole; deliver reports across all areas of work to the EC on a monthly basis and to the NEB at their meetings; and establish mechanisms for the review of effectiveness of all programs.

Key Programmatic Areas

  1. Manage financial operations of the organization, including fundraising, financial transactions, payroll, and legal compliance; working closely with the Treasurer, bookkeeper, accountant, bank representatives, attorneys, and Pride at Work Chapter leaders.
  2. Lead the organization through a strategic planning process, in concert with the EC, that engages the NEB, membership and chapters, in order to maintain strength at the chapter level, grow membership numbers across all work and geographical sectors, and continually assess the organizational infrastructure and operations to meet current and future challenges.
  3. Plan, manage and execute the 2026 Quadrennial Membership Convention.
  4. Work with the AFL-CIO Civil, Human and Women’s Rights Department and the various constituency groups, representing Pride at Work with competency and respect in spaces that integrate the diverse fabric of the American scene.
  5. Plan and execute direct voter contact program in even number years, in coordination with the Progressive Workers Coalition across multiple swing states; working with our chapters and national leaders to conduct boots-on-the-ground campaign mobilizations.
  6. Convene a coalition of labor unions to propose and execute day-long Institutes and informational Caucuses at the National Lesbian and Gay Task Force’s annual Creating Change National Conferences.
  7. Serve as national spokesperson, along with Co-Presidents, representing the organization across the landscape of LGBTQIA+ civil rights, labor and political groups, governmental agencies and branches, the press, and general public. Write and approve official position papers, statements, and press releases; provide interviews and create opportunities for the organization to be seen and heard across all platforms; give speeches at conferences and rallies; etc.
  8. Continually maintain and build relationships with relevant organizations and leaders; especially, but not limited to, within the LGBTQIA+ and labor arenas.

Personnel Management

  1. Responsible for selection, employment, and/or termination of staff (reporting to the Executive Director). Develop job descriptions, establish standards of performance, and conduct/assign performance evaluations. Assign and coordinate all staff responsibilities.
  2. Responsible for negotiation and implementation of all contractual agreements with staff, including any applicable collective bargaining agreements covering staff.
  3. Determine all conditions of employment, wages, and benefits of staff, in coordination with the EC.
  4. Provide for staff development, including programs and continuing education.
  5. Maintain an accurate table of organization with clear lines of communication and responsibility.

Financial Management (in conjunction with the Treasurer and EC):

  1. Administer all organizational business, including financial transactions and execution of contracts.
  2. Ensure the timely preparation of financial reports, tax returns, annual audits, and all other legal and regulatory reports.
  3. Ensure that all funds, physical assets, and other property of the organization are appropriately protected, maintained and administered.
  4. Prepare the annual budget for approval by the EC and NEB.
  5. Establish and ensure the maintenance of appropriate fiscal controls and records.

QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRABLES:

  • Proven experience in leading an organization with administrative, financial and policy skills; and/or work at the Organizer and Field Director levels for a union, electoral campaign, and/or community organization. 
  • Understanding of organizing fundamentals, including power analysis, worker/member assessments, and developing leaders.
  • Experience creating and managing budgets and meeting all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintaining accurate and current lists and databases.
  • Union member or staff, with basic understanding of how union contracts, grievances and locals operate. Of primary importance: understanding the principles of unionism.
  • Creating and facilitating adult education programming for groups of 20 to 100+.
  • Ability to travel as a requisite for the position; average of 20% over the course of a year; willingness to travel by plane, train, and vehicle across the United States, as needed, with overnight stays in hotels.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends, as needed, as the organization has chapters across the continental United States, Alaska and Hawai’i, and represents members who work non-traditional hours. During election seasons, evenings and weekends are expected, as needed.
