About the IUPAT
The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) represents a growing force of men and women in the United States and Canada who work in the Finishing Trades – Industrial & Commercial Painting, Drywall Finishing, Glazing & Glass Work, and Floor Covering Installation, and many more successful careers in the construction industry and public sector. The IUPAT DC 10 is committed to representing, building power with and fighting alongside with all workers in our industry; union and non-union alike.
Position Overview:
An Organizer is responsible for advocating and supporting the interest of the members within our district council. This role involves inspiring workers to take collective action, improve working conditions, wages and benefits, compliance with labor laws; while fostering a strong sense of solidarity and community
Organizer Responsibilities
- Build one-on-one relationships with workers through outreach efforts that include job site visits, house calls, etc.
- Educate workers about the importance of collective bargaining, union benefits and membership
- Work with existing and potential union members in developing a worker organizing committee
- Regularly engages contractors, engineers, architects and end-users in order to strengthen the IUPAT presence in the market and maintain labor standards;
- Assist in recruiting and developing workforce to meet labor demands
- Develop and implement organizing campaigns to increase union membership and influence.
- Maintain report protocol
- Assist in organizing and coordinating large actions such as pickets, rallies, marches, and strikes
- Assist leaders in mobilizing for union actions, community actions and campaigns through activities such as phone-banking, leafleting, online outreach, site visits, home visits, etc.
- Assist with outreach to engage student organizations, community groups, and other allies
- Perform administrative tasks necessary (such as maintaining databases, producing materials and correspondence)
- Any other duties/tasks as assigned
Candidate Characteristics
- Has demonstrated commitment to union democracy, member-driven organizing, and marketing of our union
- Someone that is bilingual and literate in English and Spanish languages.
- Must be outgoing, have a positive attitude, and follow direction
- An ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to work some weeknights and weekends
- Willingness to respond promptly to emails, phone calls, and other forms of communication
- Willingness to represent and organize all IUPAT DC 10 crafts.
